Captain Bourne joined the Teamsters in May 2008 as the Director of the Airline Division. His vision, know-how and reputation as a visionary leader has led Airline Division to record levels of representation by focusing on membership needs, organizing and legislative action.
David is a Boeing 747-400 captain who immediately prior to accepting his current position, served as the Master Executive Council (MEC) chairman for the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) unit at Atlas Air, Inc. After leading two organizing drives at Atlas, a bitter court battle and two efforts to secure a contract, in July 2002 he signed the first collective bargaining agreement in Atlas Air’s history. In 2005, he led the successful effort to fully protect and improve the pilots’ contract during the airline’s bankruptcy filing, leading to an improved labor/management relationship at the company.
At the request of the President of ALPA, Bourne also served as vice chairman of ALPA’s Presidents Committee on Cargo. Prior to Atlas, he was a corporate jet captain in charge of International Operations for Washington, D.C.-based Riggs National Bank, having previously served as chief pilot of the corporate flight department for the president of the AFL-CIO under the Building and Construction Trades Department.
An ardent trade unionist, Dave has a long, proud union background. Both his father and grandfather worked the mines in West Virginia. His first job in aviation was as a substitute co-pilot for the Teamsters.
He is a graduate of George Mason University in Virginia with a degree in Human Factors Engineering.
